SABIAN Drum Cymbal set: the Signature Neil Peart Paragon Performance Set
Coinciding with the debut of its new Signature Neil Peart Paragon range of cymbals, SABIAN has introduced the Paragon Performance Set. This set – 14” Hats with crisp, clean ‘chic’ sounds when closed and a solid, full sound when played open; a medium-weight 16” crash with quick, punchy responses and explosive power; and an extra-heavy 22” Ride with solid stick definition enhanced by a warm blend of tone – provides a foundation for anyone seeking the bright and powerful sounds specified by Peart. The sound of Paragon is the result of a combination of design elements from three SABIAN series.
Said SABIAN master product specialist Mark Love: “The overall effectiveness of Paragon is enhanced by the unique combination of lathing – wide-groove AA lathing on the bottom increases the explosiveness of the cymbals while narrow AAX pinpoint lathing on the top boosts brightness and tightens up the focus, for increased clarity and projection. This combination makes heavier cymbals respond like lighter models… they’re much more sensitive to the touch and respond more efficiently. Hand hammering on the bells warms and unifies the overall sound of each cymbal. A good example is the ride. While Neil wanted strong definition with the ride, he didn’t want the typically cold, dry stroke sound associated with heavier cymbals; he wanted stick definition and tone for a warmer, more musical presence. Though the Paragon ride is extra-heavy, it is surprisingly ‘open’ sounding and crashable. Play it with the shank of the stick and the tone blends with the overall definition… the overtones and undertones combine to make it a very musical yet effective cymbal, which is exactly what he wanted.”
