The Cymbal of the Drum or Orchestra is an important part in the openness of the mix. If your cymbals sound muffled, or too compressed your mix will not sound natural.

The Cymbal is, just like other drum and percussion instruments, a very difficult instrument. It has no real fundamental frequency and it doesn't follow the same harmonic rules that voice, stringed instruments (guitar, bass, piano, violin) or wind instruments (flute, saxophone) follow.
